When communicating with people from different fields, I am often asked the question – where to start learning SEO? I usually recommend certain books, presentations, and blogs, but in this article, we’ll take a closer look at where to start and what to look for.
Be prepared, and you won’t be able to learn SEO in 1-2 weeks unless you have a piece of superficial knowledge. If you want to understand the details in more detail and navigate trends, you will need to spend a month or two on training, or even more, depending on your goals.
20+ Topics to Get Started with SEO
Somewhere I will provide links. You will have to search for some information on your own, and the list is presented only in order to understand the direction of movement. Moreover, if you want to explore more about SEO, you should get an SEO Course in Lahore.
First, you must understand for yourself what exactly you need to learn from this area, and for what? So, for example, businessmen only need to know the base and participate in communities, managers, in addition to the base, will need to communicate with optimizers, and future analysts will need to delve into, among other things, reading patents or their own experiments.
As you have noticed, regardless of the field of activity, everyone who studies search engine optimization must have a certain knowledge base. Below I will list a few points that, in my opinion, should be known to everyone involved in SEO, and you have already chosen those that you think should be included in your database without fail.
What is a search engine, its tasks?
When studying SEO, we must understand the very environment in which we plan to work. Therefore, study in more detail what a search engine is, what its tasks are, what is the difference between different search engines, what are the rules of participation, and so on. The more information you find on this topic, the more questions you will have and the understanding where there are gaps.
Search results page components
What is on the search results page beside the results themselves? There are a lot of nuances here, as SERPs are not only about ads and organic search results. Study this page for different requests and try to understand why it looks like this. What affects the appearance of this or that element on the search page?
Additional search services
Google are not only search results; they also provide many additional services, including search engine optimization. For example, Google. Directory, Maps or Catalogs, Market or Google Alerts … Knowledge of these and other services will be useful for the optimizer.
Do different people see search results in the same way? What does it depend on? When studying SEO, you definitely need to understand the issue of personalizing search results.
Geography and language
How do a user’s geography and language affect search results? How can I customize my site so that it is shown to people from the desired region? Is it possible to show the site to users from different regions?
User interaction format
Previously, search engines were tree-like directories, and later they began to give an answer to a question and look like a list. Now they allow you to make a transaction directly in the search results (for example, to specify a departure flight without entering the site yet). For some requests, where a momentary answer is needed (for example, about the weather, train schedule, or taxi phone number), users may not go to the sites at all. The format is constantly changing and depends on the type of request. You need to figure it out in more detail, learn about the Google Knowledge Graph, learn about data micro-markup.
You can learn about trends from various sources. It is advisable to follow the news of search engines or specialized portals and attend thematic events.
Information search (materiel)
The technical side of SEO. To work as an analyst or to be a serious optimizer, there is nowhere without knowledge of the theory of information retrieval. Also, the material will be useful for any webmaster. How is the search for documents by text query, what are the approaches, what is text and link relevance, etc.?
In addition to generating search results, one of the tasks of search engines is filtering these results in order to remove spam. Therefore, there are a number of anti-spam solutions based on text, links, or user behavior. There are plenty of materials on this topic, but many are in English (without English, learning SEO will be problematic).
Search quality assessment
How search engines measure search quality – testing, analyzing user behavior on the search results page, attracting assessors – these are also important points to consider when learning about SEO.
Search bots and their tasks
What are search bots, how do they interact with the site, how to optimize this interaction? To know SEO, you need to study in detail search bots and how a search engine works.
Evolution of ranking factors
Every year, some of the ranking factors lose their relevance, while others, on the contrary, acquire it. Of course, search engines do not disclose information about ranking factors. However, based on experiments and observations, optimizers publish various materials that will be useful to familiarize yourself with.
Assessors and machine learning
Who are assessors, and how do they help train search algorithms? There are a number of guidelines for assessors on the web, which indicate how to evaluate sites, what a quality site is, and a lot of other useful information. Find these instructions and read them.
Tools and services
To successfully study SEO, you will need to learn more about different tools, starting with those that are presented by search engines (webmaster’s panel, analytics systems), ending with auxiliary tools, depending on the tasks to be solved.
Optimization for social media
What is the role of social media in SEO, how to get additional traffic from social networks or integrate a website with social networks to improve the SEO effect as well – a separate area that requires additional study for a beginner?
Learn about the elements of inbound marketing and consider how you can apply them to your site to get more traffic and natural links.
Narrow directions, chips
After learning the basics, you can already go deeper into some areas and “redeem chips.” You can’t do without participating in various communities and reading forums.
Books, video courses, patents
From books, I can recommend only “The Art of SEO” (in Russian – “SEO – the art of website promotion”) and “Introduction to information search”. There are a lot of video courses on different topics, and you need to search on YouTube or follow educational projects such as Web Promo Experts. It is also useful to participate in webinars that are organized by different companies – for this, and you need to constantly monitor the news or look for records in the archives.
Seminars and conferences
Attending educational seminars and conferences also helps in learning SEO. There are also weekend courses, wherein one day you can learn from the experience of experts (but you need to be ready for this) at conferences you can always learn something new, see cases of solving specific problems or meet the right people.
Finally, experiment. You can drop all the previous points if you have the right tools and the opportunity to experiment in your arsenal. True, this often takes more time than gaining experience through other sources.
This will be enough to get you started, and then you will already know how to continue.
